Moosic news, November 2012

November 2012...

Greetings everyone! Had a great little tour in Ireland last month, visited a few old neighbours (that's my old mate Moo you can see there in the photo....), and got to shoot a brand new live video of Half a Man with the wonderfully talented Andrew Jordan in Iveagh Gardens, Dublin. If you'd like to check it out, then here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSOLhf1qI4w

Just a few more shows in London this year. This Saturday I'll performing at the Kensington Roof Gardens supporting Felicity Kaya which should be a real treat. One of the best venues in town they tell me, first person to email back gets a free double pass... ! Advance bookings receive a £5 discount if you use the promo code "roof":

https://www.ticketweb.co.uk/event/smooth-saturday-tickets/15903?language=en-us

The following Friday 23rd I'm at the HOME OF CRICKET! Lords Tavern, Lords Cricket Ground. For those of you who'd like to come along to Lords, I'll have a free download for you on the night - won't say too much more other than it relates to where I'm playing. This song won't be available outside of this show until next year some time, so if you're interested/curious or if you'd just like to have a beer and a bit of a laugh then come on down. Playing for 3hrs from 8pm, so no doubt will throw in a few covers in as well. An opportunity to see me in a more relaxed environment, maybe even to hit me with the odd heckle if you're feeling a vibe. Free entry, food available, and you can book a table by phoning (020) 7266 5980.

My last gig in London is on December 2nd at the Battersea Mess with my good friends the Paper Shades, who you might remember played at my album launch a couple of months ago (brilliant duo, beautiful music). This is one of my favourite rooms, always a great lineup and it's been a pleasure being involved with the guys at Broken Folk throughout the year.

From there I'll be returning to the homeland for a bit of R&R (and maybe a wave or two) before hitting the road again next year for a run of dates in Germany. Beyond that your guess is as good as mine, but I can guarantee it will involve music, travel, and meeting great new people. And as far as existences go, I reckon that ain't so bad....

So if you're in London, hope to see you in the next few weeks. If you're in Oz, I'll catch you some time after that :)

Love and thanks,

Live filming, Irish walkabout...

October 2012

Greetings music lovers,

Have you evern been to the Spanish Las Vegas? If not, then you're missing out, as you can tell from the above photo. A hive of activity that's for sure! Anyway this is of course completely unrelated to my music, so I will move on.

A bit of news to get to about the next few weeks, here goes....

LIVE FILMING @ THE TROUBADOUR, OCTOBER 23RD

Excited to announce that I'll be doing a live video recording of my set at The Troubadour next Tuesday 23rd October. After all the shows I have played all around London, this remains my favourite venue and for good reason - they serve free popcorn. And do you know the best thing about free popcorn? Me either. Anyway if you're free next Tuesday it'd be great to see you, the videos always sound a bit better with applause, or whistling, or ladies' underwear. No sorry that last one makes them look better. I'm getting my senses mixed up. Regardless, all sensory input welcome, hope to see you there... Tues 23/10 - The Troubadour, Live Filming.
www.troubadour.co.uk
Entry £6, from 8pm.

IRISH TOUR, 24-31 OCT

Really looking forward to returning to Ireland, where most of the songs for the new album were written through the winter of 2010-11. I guess you could say this trip is long overdue! If you've got some friends hovering about over there, by all means drop them a line and tell them to come say hi - the Fieldnotes marketing budget has all but been exhausted on the London underground so any assistance on that front is always greatly appreciated. Notwithstanding the fact that I just love meeting new people - it's one of the best things about touring....

For the full list of shows you can check out the gigs page here:

News from the Baltic Sea... September 2012

News from the Baltic Sea...

September 2012

Hi again folks and welcome to the new readers! Just back from a wonderful two weeks in Germany, most of which was spent cruising around the north coast playing shows along the Baltic Coastline. Until about a month ago I didn't even know Germany had a Baltic Coastline, but as it turns out, it's pretty nice up there... There's even a few surf shops! (Hence the photo). Well not surf shops as we know them in Australia, because there's not actually any surf.... But waves or no waves, there was something wonderfully familiar about doing a show barefoot in a surf shop (this despite me never having played in a surf shop before). I guess it was a feeling of being at home, with the sand between my feet and not a care in the world... Which may tell you something about where I'm going to end up in the longer term...

Anyway a big thanks to the folks at Tartort Hawaii* for having me to play, and to the rest of the venues and audiences on my little German walkabout for being so welcoming along the way... Not forgetting Lena and Julia at the Vondomachine for making it all possible in the first place. What a treat for a bald Australian dude to play some songs he wrote in Ireland on the north coast of Germany. It's one of the things I love about music - you sit down to write a song and you just never know what sort of adventure it's going to take you on.

And before I forget, whilst I'm on the topic of thank yous.... I must say a big CHEERS! to all the legends/champions/good-timers who came along to the Fieldnotes launch in London!! It was a wonderful experience for me to launch an album on the other side of the world, and it was great to be able to share it with everyone in the room. A shout-out here also to Tom Figgins and the Paper Shades for gracing the stage, and last but not least the incredible Andy Schrav for absolutely tearing it up on the keys as usual. The man can play! For those of you who are interested, I've put a little video of our first song on youtube - The Mission... Hope you enjoy it!

Anyway plenty of tour dates coming up, which depending on where you are reading this will either be over there on the right, or somewhere down the bottom. A few shows in London this month, then a trip to Ireland at the end of October, back to where the album started... May also be some dates in mainland Europe to tell you about, best to keep an eye on the website as I'm regularly updating that along the way.

Alright that'll do me for now but before I shoot off, here's a link to a picture from my last show in Germany, the Melodica Festival in Boltenhagen, with Ollie on the lap steel... One of the tour highlights for sure, hope to be back there again next year...

Fieldnotes UK Launch, August 23rd...

August 2012...

Hi again Ladies and Gents,

Not sure about you, but I've certainly caught a dose of Olympics fever over here in London. So much so that I was even mistaken for an Olympic triathlete the other day! Ha ha. Very flattering, but I had to laugh. Couldn't quite bring myself to perpetuate the myth, even if it was tempting at first...

Anyway, in addition to impersonating elite sportsmen, I've been busy trying to put things in place for this album launch shindig, and I'm happy to report that we're all systems go for the big night on August 23rd, with my good mate Andy Schrav joining me on the keys and Tom Figgins opening the show from around 8pm. I've even managed to get the album on iTunes in advance, which based on my usual sense of timing is nothing short of a complete miracle. All the songs are still available on Bandcamp of course, but if you're into the whole iTunes thing and you've got yourself all synced up on the different platforms/devices/machines/technologicalgizmos, then here's the link for ya:

http://itunes.apple.com/au/album/fieldnotes/id546311213

Following on from the launch, I'll be in touring in Germany for a couple of weeks. Always have a great time over there, and I'm sure this trip will be no different. Have listed the current tour dates on this email, but there will probably be a few more to add to these. For updates, best to keep an eye on the website:

www.rennyfield.com

I'm aware this is the part where I should probably be telling you to vote somewhere, request somewhere else and all that nonsense... But I'd much rather you just enjoy listening to the songs without having to worry about what number to call or which email address to use on some stupid form that will no doubt earn you the right to receive bucketloads of crap for the next 10 years. So we'll skip that part.

I would however certainly appreciate any help you could give me spreading the word about the launch on the 23rd. Still can't quite afford the marketing team, and it's really through word of mouth that these things are successful. So I'm gonna put a few links in here, and if you were able to share them with any friends of yours in London that would be awesome. The Bedford is a wonderful room, and it's gonna be a great night.

Shows starts 8pm UK time, so that's 5am in Australia, midday in LA, 10pm in Antananarivo and if you're somewhere else, check this out:

Allo from Hamburg, July 2012

July 2012...

Allo from Hamburg! At least thats where I was when i started writing this latest missive. I've since returned to the beautiful summer climes of good ol' London town. Ain't that like a wet sock across the temple.

Before I go on, some July reading music for you from a great Irish songwriter by the name of Mundy...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8J9gftIVR8

Now where was I? Ah yes Hamburg. The Beatles did something here once, I'd love to explain what exactly, but at the same time I was being told the story I was simultaneously fending off advances from the local women of the night, who gather at roughly 10cm intervals on either side of the infamous Reeperbahn. And well, as much as I like to be a student of music history, particularly that relating to one of the greatest bands of all time, when a young buxom blonde German woman looks you straight in the eye like you're the long lost love of her life (regardless of whether or not she also wants to steal all your money), you can't help but be at least a little bit distracted...

Distractions aside however, there was a purpose to my being in Hamburg besides getting lost in the Red Light district, namely to perform at the Campus Open Air festival. A spot on the Melodica stage to be exact, with my good mate Brett Winterford. You can read more about the Melodica festival by following this link:

http://www.melodicafestival.org/

A big thanks to Torben and the team for the invitation, a nice opportunity for me and a great excuse to travel to Hamburg for the first time. On that note, Hello and welcome! to all the new members of the mailing list, (I want to call you Hamburgers but I'm not sure that's the correct term...?), and goodbye to those of you who are now scrolling down in search of the "unsubscribe" link, having discovered you signed up to a monthly email about German prostitutes. Sorry to see you go, but hey it was fun while it lasted. (Exactly what she said).

(No I didn't actually sleep with a German prostitute...)

Right, in other news....

Did a little radio interview with the guys at Cofi Radio a few weeks back. They record weekly podcasts, featuring new music from London - here's a link to my episode, but there are a whole bunch of them online if you feel like hearing some brand new music from this part of the world...

http://cofiradio.co.uk/episode9

Also should mention a good mate of mine, Andy Schrav, has just finished his new record, and will be launching it here in London on August 22nd, before joining me on the keys for the launch of Fieldnotes the very next day! A great Australian musician, here's a link to his page:

http://www.facebook.com/schravmusic

And that'll just about do me for now. As always, the gigs are at the bottom here for you... A big night in London at the end of the month to finish off Brett Winterford's European tour, followed by the Fieldnotes Album Launch on August 23rd! Feel free to share around with anyone you know in London, and tell them to come say g'day!

Thanks for your support, see you soon.

Busking with Elvis...

Greetings from South London, where the weather is still trying to make it's mind up between (a) rain, (b) imminent rain, and (c) more rain. Hence it's a good day to sit inside and watch videos, possibly even videos of Elvis, alive and well, performing outside the Angel Sainsburys. Don't believe me? Well it's a good thing that my old mate Brett Winterford was on hand to capture the evidence! (Some of you may have seen this on facebook, but I thought the mailing list deserved a look too...).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VYiIcUQaUs

Now, Brett Winterford has since progressed to far bigger and better things than filming Renny Field performing with Elvis impersonators. In fact, he's currently touring through Europe to support the release of his new solo EP, which is quite a wonderful little collection of tunes I must say. You can find out more and have a listen here:

http://onesheet.com/brettwinterford/

I'll be seeing Brett again in a few weeks time to perform in Hamburg as part of the Campus Open AIr Festival, and he'll also be back here at the end of July to perform with me at the Troubadour in Earls Court. Details for those shows and my other upcoming tour dates should be at the bottom here somewhere.....

And whilst we're on the topic of shows, I should mention one that I'm starting to get a little bit excited about.....

FIELDNOTES - UK ALBUM LAUNCH!

THE BEDFORD, 23RD AUGUST 2012

It's been a while coming, but I'm looking forward to launching the new album at one of the best acoustic rooms in London. Gonna be a great night with a few special guests, and I'd love to have you along to help celebrate. I've set up an event page on facebook which I'll be passing round in the near future, and whilst I don't like to ask for things as a rule, if you were able to forward the details on to anyone you know in London who might be interested, that would be a huge help and much appreciated!

For those of you who'd like to hear it in advance, a little reminder that the album is now for sale online via bandcamp. iTunes to come soon, but bandcamp is so much cooler.... And if you don't want to buy it straight away, you're welcome to listen for free.

htttp://rennyfield.bandcamp.com

Finally I should also mention a nice little night I'm playing this Sunday 17th called Broken Folk at the Battersea Mess and Music Hall. Wonderful old venue with couches at the ready for a lazy Sunday evening of acoustic music. Doors 6.30pm, 4 acts, and only £3 to get in. I reckon that's a pretty good deal...

That'll do me for now, a little bit more news on the horizon, but I gotta save myself something interesting to tell you next time round, especially now I've played my trump card there with Dave Elvis. Perhaps I'll leave you instead with a beautiful little tune from an artist I saw for the first time last night. There will always be a place in the world for music like this...

Fieldnotes - The new album

Fieldnotes the Album
Handmade and delivered to your door...

Well folks it's been a while since the last update, but I wanted to give you some good news to kick things off again and I figured a new album was decent enough reason to get back on the airwaves. So.... I'm happy to announce that "Fieldnotes" is hot off the press and ready to roll!

Recorded with my good mate and producer Kent Eastwood, the album is a collection of tunes I've written these past few years whilst wandering around the globe with my guitar and a suitcase. Many of these songs came from the time I spent in the Irish winter, tucked away in a small cottage on the Sheep's Head peninsula (well worth a look if you're ever over that way...). Some of you may remember a series of videos I posted from Ireland some time ago - I guess this new album is the finished version of those songs, with a few more that I've written in the time since then. Here's the full track listing:

The Mission, Half a man, Doin' the time, That morning, Rhythm, The best things, All the love, Start again, Lifeline, If my love returns to me, Breathless, Perfect.

I've put a couple of tracks on my soundcloud page if you'd like to head on over and take a listen....

www.soundcloud.com/rennyfield

We started tracking about a year ago in an abandoned timber shack in Glen Innes, spent a bit of time mixing by correspondence between Glen Innes and London, and more recently finished the project at my mother's house in Avalon, just north of Sydney. It's a bit crazy when you think about it - writing songs in Ireland, recording them in Glen Innes, mixing them in London and tying it all together in Avalon - but that's a bit representative of the life I've been living, and whilst it hasn't always been the easiest existence, I guess I wouldn't have it any other way. The title of the album - Fieldnotes - was just about the best thing I could come up with to describe this journey and the songs that came with it. Funnily enough, I typed "Fieldnotes" into Wikipedia (just to make sure it wasn't a hip-hop collaboration between Madonna and Jay-Z.....), and found this:

"accounts describing experiences and observations the researcher has made while participating in an intense and involved manner"

Seemed to me a pretty accurate description....

--------------------------------------------

So how do you get a copy?!

The album will be available at my shows and as a digital release (iTunes etc) in the not too distant future, but I thought I'd make the first few physical copies available to those of you on the mailing list, just as a way of saying thanks for your support over the years. The packaging has been stamped front and back by hand, and each copy comes with a handwritten book of lyrics to all the songs. The picture at the top of the email should give you a good idea of what they look like... (Quite proud to say I designed the artwork myself for this one - not such a bad effort considering a stick man with a hat is about the best I've ever come up with previously, and the hat was pretty average...).

For those of you who order the album with me directly, I am able to personalise the CD (ie to"Your name"), and I will sign and date each copy. So... if you're in the market for some new tunes, here are the steps you need to take:

* Send an email to renny@rennyfield.com to let me know you'd like to order a copy.

* For Australian and UK residents, please indicate if you'd like to pay by bank transfer or Paypal (for those of you in other parts of the world, Paypal only at this stage).

* Let me know what name(s) you'd like on the CD. If you'd like more than one copy (ie for a gift or something similar), then let me know who the other copies are for.

* Finally, I'll need your address! So I can send it to you. Which is sort of the point... (I can also send alternate copies to different addresses if you let me know who/where etc).

So assuming that all works without too much of a hitch, I'll then send through payment instructions and also let you know when I've put the CD in the mail!

Prices:

For this initial release, the Albums will be $25 AUD, inclusive of postage & handling. (For multiple orders - $25 for the first CD, $20 each thereafter).

I will be in the UK/Europe again from mid-April so I thought I'd just keep the amount inclusive of postage, that way it's always the same regardless of where I happen to be at the time you order. Figured that was about as fair as I could be. The album will cost a little less once it's on iTunes, but if you're a fan of opening little parcels and you'd like the real thing, delivered to your door, then this is your best option...

Anyway that'll do me for now I think. Below is a link to a few pics from an album launch preview we did at High Tea in Sydney a few weeks ago, featuring the brother Eastwood on keys and my actual brother, Matt Field, on drums/percussion. Thanks to the guys at High Tea for a wonderful night as always, and to Dave Vagg for the great pics.

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150712926013749.422592.338924578748&type=1

And finally, before I go, a BIG congrats and good luck to my brother and his fiance Belinda, who are getting married this Saturday 7th April! Awesome squared.

Till next time, love and high fives to you all.

Cheers,

Renny

House concerts...

Last night I was fortunate enough to play a wonderful little house concert with my good mate Kent Eastwood in Collaroy. Thought I'd mention it here because we had such a great time. House concerts are a great chance to unwind with old friends and new, and often provide the perfect setting for acoustic music. If you're interested in organising something similar, wherever you happen to be, then please drop me a line and maybe we can figure something out...
